Why Facebook will NOT become a paysite (for regular members)

So there’s a word spreading on facebook that the site will become a paysite from June 1st. There have been created several groups as a reaction to this, one with more than 2 million members. To cut it short: Facebook will not become a paysite (for regular members) and creators of such groups do have a hidden agenda.
But why won’t Facebook charge money from their 80+ million users? I quick dig-in into the new Internet economy and what drives it is in order, and a quick glance at why you shouldn’t join a group stating such.
- Internet networks sites measure to critical mass of users: The most important measurement of a succesfull Internet network company is its number of users, and preferably unique users. Facebook has an incredible mass of more than 80 million users, more than half are visiting the site every day. This number makes two things happen: 1) advertisement becomes more lucrative because of the expanding audience and 2) the stock price increase with number of users and the increased advertisement value.
- More than half of Facebook users would quit the site if they were charged even the smallest fee: More than half of facebook users visits the site every day. This also indicates that close to half do not. It’s natural to believe that these members would not care to upheld their facebook membership if they had to pay for it. Cutting the facebook users in more than half would have two dependent effects: 1) Facebooks “value” would be cut in half based on number of members and 2) the remaining members would find less value in the site when loosing half of their friends base. Nothing kills a network site quicker than membership decline.
- Facebooks most important asset is the membership information: Less users mean less information about people. This information is valuable for Facebooks potential partners.
- Facebook already turned down $1 billion offer from Yahoo: which means that they can validate their current business plan with FREE membership.
- Facebook are looking into new business models to make money from their members: But in order to make money from your members you need to HAVE members. Which means you let them in the door for free and THEN charge them money from what they need the most. For instance, commercial “become a fan” sites may cost money to create, some groups may charge entrance fee in order to share the information, or some add-ons or applications may cost money. But the basics of facebook - join, add friends, comment, write on wall and such - will remain free, attract new users and make people feel “comfortable” on facebook.
- Creating groups like “we will not pay for facebook” is all about spam: yes, they find something facebook users care about and make them join. The result is that the group owner suddenly has a mass of 2 million users he/she can send mass mails to. “Send message” to 2 million people is an incredible powerful spam tool!
- Based on all of the above, facebook should pay US to join: more users increase stock price, increase advertisement value, improve reputation, increase company data assets and makes facebook more interesting for 3rd party application developers to create payable applications that facebook take a fee from. By simply joining facebook, for free, you drive all these factors up for facebook. Your mere presence on facebook is payment enough!
And, if you wonder whether facebook will become a paysite or anything else about facebook, do a quick google and figure it out
