Day 10 - 12: Gathering the Norskies
Categories: IssuesI know, I know. It’s been three days since last post. I think it’s because I’m kind of settled. This following week carries some formal representations but no school yet. So basically we’ve just spent time gathering the Norskies.
Making Cambridge unsafe: There were two fellow Norwegian students coming in this weekend, one on Friday and the other on Saturday. Håvard, who flew in on Saturday was supposed to arrive on Friday too but his plane got canceled. Instead he arrived a bit early on Saturday, only to find his apartment locked with no one in it. The only guy he had a phone number to was me. Øystein and I were trawling the streets of Newbury and had a pretty good lunch when Håvard called me. The only solution I could find that wouldn’t leave him freezing to death was to grab a cab and take him with my to our place. By the time the cab arrived his place, his fellow roommate had come back from his two hour jog, surprised to find a frozen fellow national on the stairway. Basically that kicked off a good night with food and drinks. The four of us ended up at a bar in Cambridge, making sure everyone understood we were from Norway.
No Country for Old Men: Sunday was kind of the day after. We chilled at our flat for a while Øystein and I decided to check out a movie at the Cinema. No Country for Old Men was a weird movie by the Cohen brothers. It’s seemed like a very good thriller (note that this thriller movie had no background music at all, leaving all sounds stronger to impression) but, without disclosing too much, it turned out real weird. I was a bit disappointed about this, but it was really scary.
The third roomie: This week started out like the last one ended: pretty slow. We had a jog down to the gym to play squash at the excellent courts at MIT. Playing two complete games but being interrupted after two sets in the last game, Øystein and I made it to a complete tie, each with one match win and one set win in the last game. But it’s fun to play. Morten, our last roommate, was supposed to arrive at night. The other Norskies wanted to go out and have a bite to eat, so Øystein and I decided to go with them hopefully making it before Morten arrived. Unfortunately, on our way back, the subway got delayed for some mysterious reason, leaving Morten freezing on the porch for a good half hour. Sorry about that
Anyway, he seems like a good guy who will fit into our place quite well.
Today I give you the top three quotes at MIT:
- “e/c^2 root(-1) v*s”
- “There are 10 kind of people in this world: those who understands binary and those who don’t”
- “MIT Enginerds”
Oh, btw: as I write this my former school, Cal Poly, is live on ESPN in a basket game versus Pacific. Cal Poly’s been up throughout the game but now they’re taking a beating. I miss that place!
